Teenage Fanclub
The story of Teenage Fanclub started in Glasgow almost 20 years ago, in July 1989. The first action was to record the LP A Catholic Education, which was released in 1990 on fledgling US indie Matador and fledgling UK indie Paperhouse. The group began to play live and people liked the sound they made, so they played live more often and enjoyed the experience of playing music in front of people in different cities, in different countries. They signed to slightly bigger labels in 1991 and released Bandwagonesque. More people seemed to like the sound they were making and Teenage Fanclub travelled more extensively and played on slightly bigger stages than before, in countries they had never before visited. This pattern continued through the 1990s and into the 2000s with the releases of subsequent records Thirteen (1993), Grand Prix (1995), Songs From Northern Britain (1997), Howdy! (2000) and Man-Made (2005). Over the years, the general sound has changed from slightly distorted guitars to slightly quieter guitars with keyboards. The songs have always been fairly introspective, melancholic and melodic. At the moment, the group consists of Norman Blake, Raymond McGinley, Gerard Love, Francis Macdonald and David McGowan. They have recently completed a new, as yet untitled, LP, which should be released “soon”.
